What? A new hotel project of the American entrepreneur Michael Achenbaum, the man behind the Gansevoort hotels in New York. Despite the curtain fetisj that the name of this hotel might suggest, The Curtain is simply located on Curtain Road, right in the middle of the hipster neighbourhood which is Shoreditch. And ‘hip’ is the least one can say to describe this beautiful project, which consists not only of a hotel, but also an underground members’ club, a wellness resort and several bars and restaurants. In the category of restaurants we would highly recommend the soul food kitchen at Red Rooster. The ultimate hipster detail at The Curtain would definitely be the sneaker cleaning service, which means that you can leave your dirty sneakers at the door at night to find them all fresh the next morning. No kidding.
Looks? Just like all the other hotels in the Gansevoort Hotel Group, The Curtain was designed by Dexter Moren Associates. They succeeded in adding some British glamour to the rough image of Shoreditch. The interior feels very city chic without being posh. The tools for that effect are industrial steel windows, brick walls, bright green Chesterfield sofa’s and a luxurious dark herringbone floor. Because of the amazing architecture and interior design, the hotel is nominated for the prestigious International Hotel & Property Awards 2018.
What else? We saved the best for last, when we state that the breakfast on the rooftop terrace – where you can also take a swim – is the best breakfast you’ll find in London. Refined, not to heavy and packed with flavour. Take it from someone who’s had hundreds of London breakfasts. For the lemon curd they serve at The Curtain you can wake me up every single night.
